Newspaper Offers Various Texts for Students

Reading various texts is one of the Indonesian Curriculum 2013 demand. Senior High School students, age 15 to 18 years old, are hoped to be able to comprehend and also able to write various texts namely: descriptive, narrative, recount, review, argumentative, discussion,  Advertisement, Brochure, flyer, letter, exposition, explanation, and procedure.

Curriculum 2013 causes students to change the way they learn the language, especially the English subject. English is a foreign language in Indonesia. Introduce students to various texts in English bring their own challenge. One of the challenges is letting the students have contact with the real text.

One of the solutions is inviting the student to read a newspaper. Newspapers can act as the ultimate source for learning how texts used in their real social function. As an example, the adds page allows the student sees various kinds of advertisements. Advertisement is not easy to access by the student, and it is not part of the students reading material they choose to read. Comprehending advertisement is important so that the students can grab a chance.

There is ample text that can be learned in a newspaper. The support from the school is needed. Schools should provide an English language newspaper. The Jakarta Post is the best option.
